Xingyu Liu: How I Became a Candle

£150.00

How I Became a Candle is a set of photographic works that explore metamorphosis, depression and death with a humorous angle.

A candle represents ritual, loss, reflection and memories. By turning my face into a lit candle, I imagine myself dead, with my black and white portrait and the candle lit for me merging into a stream of smoke, and when the candle is spent, my memory is gone.

In Buddhism, death is merely a contributing step of the cycle of life that's never-ending, and by imagining myself dead, I felt renewed at the end.
