About the artist

During the most difficult period of depression in 2023, photography became a form of therapy for Wenzhou Wu. It helped Wenzhou step out of self-isolation, transform perspective on the world, reshape ways of connecting with others, and influence a sense of self.

Wenzhou’s photographic practice explores the spiritual condition and identity struggles of contemporary youth through collaborative fieldwork. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s concept of biopolitics, Wenzhou reflects on how contemporary technological society, under the appearance of freedom within digital frameworks, constructs subtle systems of management and control. These systems transform individual experiences into data that can be parsed and classified by algorithms.

While algorithmic recommendation and digital life establish new forms of order, they often weaken genuine human communication. Working primarily with photography, Wenzhou seeks to create spaces where, within the tension between algorithmic structures and emotional alienation, fluid collective identities and individual forms can emerge.
