Danaia Konstantinova: Little Vegas

£150.00

In order to explore the fragmented nature of memory and give it a physical presence, Danaia created a series of photographs using the Mordançage method.

Working with this technique, each image is first developed as a gelatin silver print and then deliberately disrupted through bleaching, before being reborn through physical manipulation and redevelopment. Because of the unpredictable behaviour of the gelatine—as it cracks and separates the deep blacks of the black-and-white image—this cycle is repeated multiple times, forming a continuous loop until the work begins to take on a meaningful form. The final image is never predetermined; instead, it gradually emerges through repeated patterns of rupture and reconstruction, creating something entirely new.

This process requires Danaia to return to the photograph repeatedly, allowing touch and material reactions to reshape it at each stage. The peeling, lifting, and reconfiguring of the emulsion reflects the idea of leaving and returning—a direct parallel to the concept of Loop. Parts of the image detach from the surface, only to be rearranged or partially reattached in new configurations. As a result, the photograph exists in a state that is neither fully intact nor completely lost, but suspended within an ongoing cycle of transformation.
