Rebecca Howard: Metamorphic

£200.00

Metamorphic (2022–) is an ongoing series of work that explores the long relationship between marble and photographic reproduction. Since the nineteenth century, photography has been used to document, archive, and circulate marble, often standing in for the object itself through images, casts, and, more recently, digital models. Rather than acting as a neutral record, photography in this work becomes a generative force, transforming marble: flattening volume, reworking scale, and reshaping surface, light, and texture. Starting from stock images of marble (mass-produced, circulating in a networked digital space, and already flattened into images).

Metamorphic uses photogrammetry both as a visual language and as a tool to generate three-dimensional models. The work begins with these images but does not end there: by folding and unfolding photographic prints into sculptural forms, marble continuously cycles from stone to image, from image to object, and back again. The act of folding becomes a recursive, ongoing process in itself, echoing the iterative transformations at the heart of the project.
